Description:

Course Overview:
Sociology is a fascinating elective designed to introduce students to the theories surrounding the how’s and why’s of human behavior within group and cultural settings. In each of the seven units we will be looking at different social problems. The units are: Introduction (Suicide); Culture (Ethnocentrism); Deviant Behavior (The Unequal Use of “Deviant”); Socialization (Gender Roles); Marriage and Family (Divorce); Groups and Group Dynamics (War); and Prejudice and Discrimination (Stereotyping).

Course Description:
We live in a global community.  Students need to learn about other cultures in order to intelligently and respectfully interact with others. Sociology introduces students to the practices of other modern and past cultures and differing societies’s ‘acceptable’ activities. Through discussions, readings and first-hand activities, students will gain insight into the behaviors, attitudes, and values of differing groups and cultures. Students will be introduced to new perspectives on possible causes for human behavior.  Class discussions will include a comprehensive coverage of theoretical perspectives and worldview implications upon societies and cultures.  Students will demonstrate informed knowledge of the language of sociology and group dynamics through creative, individual class presentations.
