Course Overview
New media environments today are largely considered participatory spaces. In the modern age, we no longer simply consume media; we participate in its creation and dissemination. Given this new space, we must consider basic questions about media such as: Why do we consume media at all? Are we expected to learn from media content? Why care about events happening on the other side of the globe? Are we consumer or creators of media? What power dynamics are at play in media production and distribution? This course intends to raise these issues so that we can think more critically about the types of media that we consume and create.
Course Description
This course is a very fast-paced class with a great deal of new material given on a daily basis; attendance, therefore, is absolutely mandatory. Class time will be split between understanding the importance of media in our society and our own daily lives and creating a movie production of our own. Students will be lead through the various stages of movie making, which includes storyboarding, production planning, videography and movie editing.
